You said that mortgage and tax are publicly available. What are some resources I can use to find out that info about the place I'm renting now? Appreciate all your advice. Thank you.

There's a few things you can try.

First, try typing the entire street address into "google", and you'll probably get some limited information such as the block and lot number.

Second, there are websites such as "zillow.com", and in many cases, they'll have information such as the mortgages.

Here, in NYC where I am, tax information by block and lot# is available on the NYC Finance Dept website. There is another, which I haven't used for a while, where "public information" is available on all documents filed for a given property (public filings), deeds, mortgages, releases etc. These are also organized along the lines of block and lot number.

Years back, before "online information", I'll go down to the local courthouse in the county where the records are filed and archived, and I would have to personally pull the records out. You can still do it this way, though if it is "online", it is a lot more convenient, but I still have to pay a fee for being able to print it out. But browsing is free. And there is a computer terminal at the courthouse hooked up to the finance department where I can look up the tax info.

You'll have to find out in your "county", how the information is archived and made available. Usuallly, counties and towns have a department called "planning department", and generall folks there can point you to the right direction. My wife worked in a town planning department, and they are great resources on what's going on.
