Visa Change from J-1 to H-4

Hi everybody,

I am currently working as a researcher in California on a J-1 visa. I however would like to leave my job and change visa status to H-4 through my husband’s H1B visa.

I am luckily not subject to the two year home residence requirement.

Would it be possible for me to go to a US embassy in Canada to apply for this change or do I need to go back to my home country (Denmark)?

Also, how long before the appointment at the embassy can I quit my job?

Although you would have to leave the country and reenter if you (for some reason) want your visa stamped, as you aren't subject to the two year rule you can change your status (Form I-539) from within the U.S. That process typically takes about three months.
