Default Charged As An Adult
There was a fight about 2 years ago and now my friend is being charged with aiding and abetting assult in the third degree. He was 17 at the time of the fight and is now 19 years old.

He received a motion for certification and notice of intent to prosecute today saying that they are trying to charge him as an adult.

What do they have to prove in order to get him charged as an adult or what reasons do they have to have to do this?

According to the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs,
Quoting Trying a Juvenile as an Adult
The court may order that a juvenile who was age 14 or older at the time of the offense and who is charged with a felony, be certified as adult and tried in criminal, or adult, court. Juveniles convicted of an offense in criminal court receive adult sentences. Juveniles charged with first degree murder, which includes premeditated murder, who were age 16 or 17 at the time of the offense, are required by Minnesota Statutes to be certified as adults and sent to criminal court, where they receive an adult sentence if they are found guilty of the offense.

He was born in 79, so he was either 24 or 25 at the time of the fight.

According to the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs,

I looked at the link, but I can't find where it says what standards (can't think of the right word) have to be met for them to charge as an adult. What is it based on? Severity of crime or what? Don't they have to have vaild reason to be able to charge someone as an adult?

You can review the statute (Minnesota Statutes, 260B.125) here.

Requoting Aaron's quote:

In Minnesota:

Assault in the third degree (Felony). When a victim sustains "substantial bodily harm" as the result of an assault. This means when bodily injury results in temporary but substantial disfigurement or impairment of a bodily member or organ.
