How to Identify the Holder of a Note or Mortgage

My question involves real estate located in the State of: District of Columbia

How do I find out who the holder/owner of the note is on a property with a mortgage in Washington DC??

Unless you are the borrower, it could be quite difficult. The public records only show the initial security (deed of trust or whatever)
