If I Want to Get Married Secretly, How Do I Legally Separate Myself from My Parents

My question involves marriage law for the State of: Minnesota

My fiance and I want to get married without my parents knowing until the time is right. I am in the process of separating myself from them with all legal connections such as mailing address and filing independent health insurance for myself. However, I do not know how to go about the tax portion of this. By whom would I have to be claimed by in order to make this work. I know I would have to keep my last name until we decided to make it public but other than that I was wondering if there is any other legal matter that I would have to clear up before signing a marriage license. If you get married then you provide the IRS with proof and then you can file either a joint tax return or married filing separate.

Having said this. It sounds like you want to get married to escape your parents. If that is the case then you are making a huge mistake. If your fiance is encouraging you to do this then please think twice before going through with this.

The only thing that will complicate the situation further is to bring children into this relationship.

Let's not forget that in the event that the OP is a minor under the age of 18, then she needs not only WRITTEN and NOTARIZED permission from her parents to marry, but also judicial permission.
