Paternity and Custody Problem with Ex

My question involves paternity law for the State of: New Jersey

Hello, my ex girlfriend and I have a 14 month old son together. During her pregnancy we broke up and she broke off all communication with me. I tried to do everything for her while she was pregnant and be there for her when she gave birth but she wouldn't allow me to. Since I was not there for my son's birth I can assume that my name is not listed as the father on his birth certificate. For the past 14 months I've tried to see my son but his mother would not return any phone calls and I didn't know where she had moved to. Since then I have found out where she lives but I do not want to go there uninvited, be arrested, and have this influence anything with my son. What I would like to know is, what are my options filing for paternity and gaining some kind of custody/visitation rights? Please keep in mind that I am a 21 year old college student that is unable to afford a lawyer. That is why am I struggling to come up with any ideas on what I should do.

If you want to gain legal rights to your child, start a paternity action. Check with the family division of your county court to see if they have a form petition that you can use.
