Record of Shoplifting in a Retail Theft Database

I used to work at Walgreens. I had stolen merchandise worth $40. They didn't know I had stolen it. Loss prevention came in one day, and called me into the office. The loss prevention manager told me that they had me on tape stealing some merchandise. So I came out and told them the truth. I don't know if they really had me on tape or not. The police weren't called and I wasn't arrested. Basically I put down on a piece of paper stating that I had stole the merchandise and how much they were worth. I resigned the next day. When I came back to sign some papers for loss prevention, the manager told me that my name was sent to a agency where they keep record of shoplifters, etc. I think the name of the company is SmartChoice. Recently when I went to apply at Target, my name came up on this report because they do background checks with SmartChoice. Is there anything I can do to get this record off of this company? I am almost finish with my Bachelors in Finance. I just want to know if this will effect me in the future. Thanks in advance.

I'd guess the LPM went fishing on a hunch and you took the bait, it's too late now. I'm not sure how that company works, there may be an appeals process you can try. My company doesn't deal with SmartChoice so I can't say if you can resolve this, it can't hurt to try.

Actually I was way off on the name. They said it was Esteem, and ChoicePoint. I live in Illinois. Please let me know if you can give me any suggestions. Thanks.
