Default Charged for Damages Due to a Flooded Bathtub

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Alabama

i flooded my tub over the weekend and today i get a bill for 900 dollars for repair, getting the water up for my apartment as well as downstairs etc.. it says i will get another bill to replace the ceiling. Now i have no idea about my rights but that sounds a little overboard. It really was not that much water. these are very old apartments where the floor was already weak. i dont have apartment insurance. what do i do because i cannot afford to pay that 900 dollars much less ceiling repair.

If they used an outside contractor, consider asking to see their statement; I would not be surprised, though, if their figure reflects what they paid. If you believe the bill should reflect the depreciated condition of whatever was repaired, try negotiating that with your landlord.
