My car was towed for street cleaning (it was my fault - there are signs up and I should have remembered to move it). I took a cab to the towing lot, found my car, and drove away. Could I get into trouble for this?

Probably, yes.

Were there signs indicating that there was no trespassing, private property, or saying to check in at the office, etc?

Not sure of the laws on tows in your state, but it is very likely that you will still have to pay fr the impound costs. It is also possible that your car will have been reported as stolen by the tow company, so do not be surprised if a bunch of cops with guns get behind your car and order you out onto the pavement in the near future.
