Default Working Shift Changes in California

My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: California

My mother works for a retirement home, her normal hours are 11AM-7PM as the dessert chef. The lunch chef has took three weeks vacation time and now the supervisor has demanded my mother to take over the lunch chef's hours 9AM-6PM. They threatened that if she didn't comply, they will just fire her. Is that legal?

Default Re: Legal Working Shift Changes in California

100% legal. Unless she has a legally binding and enforceable contract that explicitly says that she will work these hours and none other, then the employer may change her work hours at any time and they can fire her if she refuses. The employer, not the employee, determines the work hours.

And to forestall the inevitable questions, this would be the same answer in all 50 states.
