Reckless Driving in Virginia

Hi,

I got a reckless driving by speed 83/65 ticket.

I called the clerk of Alleghany county court.

She said, I have to write the letter to judge with the explanation that why i am not able to attend the court.

My questions are:

1) Is it necessary to hire a lawyer for this case?

2)If i don't hire a lawyer, What should i have to write in the letter?

If anyone have idea about this case, please give advice to me.

How old are you, is VA your home state, and do you have anything on your record in the past 5 years?

I am 27 years old. My home state is IL. and I got driver's license one year ago.
