Angry Can a Landlord Sue a Sub-Lessee Who Paid Lessee but Did Not Pay Landlord

My question involves business law in the state of: California

I subleased an office three years ago from a company that had a master lease on our building. We religiously paid our rent to the master lessee, but they apparently did not pay the owner of the building. Now we are being sued for the entire amount of the time we were in the building, plus attorney's fees. Is this valid?

I can't read either lease from here - yours with the master lessee, or theirs with the owner. By the same token, you haven't even told us who is suing you or on what basis. If we're to infer that the building owner is suing you, it's not clear what would given them the right given that your lease was with their tenant, not directly with them.
