My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: ARIZONA
Is an employer required to pay overtime for hours worked over an employee’s normally scheduled hours if that work is not part of his normal scope of work? (Arizona)
I was hired as a flight paramedic at an hourly rate. I am scheduled 48 hours on duty, and 96 hours off duty. I receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 48 hours per week. The company has recently asked for people to teach medical classes in their off-duty time. I obliged and received the training and have taught a few classes. In looking at my paycheck, I noticed they paid me at my base rate (not my overtime rate). When I inquired, they told me that they didn't have to pay me the overtime rate. Is this legal?
