Question Helping a Teen Thrown Out of His Home
I am in search of answers fairly quickly. My son has a friend that is 16 and his mother has kicked him out of her home , He came by and asked if he could move in with us, I do not have a problem with it, but his mother is "Mental" tonight she called looing for him (he's not here) and said she was going to call the police. This boy is a very good boy and has every intention of graduating high school and future plans to join the Military. His mother is mental unstable, and uses drugs to feel "better", she says tells him he is no good, and says things to him that a child just shouldn't have to shoulder.
We live in SC and I know he can legally move out of her home when he turns 17, but what can I do in the meantime to help this boy? Can he move in with us, work, and be safe with out repremand? I don't want to see this boy end up on the streets, and on drugs like so many others in this town have.

What can I do leaglly for him?

Thanks for any info

He can live with you with his mother's permission. You can let his mother know where he is, and the legal authorities if you think she might call them, such that there can be no confusion or accusation that you're harboring a runaway.

Thank you so much for your help.. Am I understanding correctly that SC does NOT have an emancipation Law? I know he will be 17 in a few weeks, and I do know he can legally leave home at 17 in our state, am I correct?

I know of no emancipation law for South Carolina, and I know of nothing that would cause a resident of that state to be automatically emancipated at 17. A local family lawyer can clarify the state of the law.

This is a website that refers to the age/under what conditions a child is considered emancipated for the purpose of child support (basically when the non-custodial parent is no longer required to pay child support). That’s a completely different thing than a minor being emancipated by the court and allowed to choose their residence.

The age of majority in SC is 18, and SC does not have an emancipation statute.
