    Default Statute for Grand theft

    Ok guys here it is I know of a friend whom lives in new york state. He stole a $25000 boat back in 1985 in new york state. I live in florida and he wants to give me the boat. I'm trying to make sure if I take posession of the boat if I can get into trouble, and if i'd be able to get a title for it? Thanks alot guys for any help and if you can direct me to a reference would be great.

    It seems to me that the interstate transport of stolen merchandise could constitute a whole new offense, whatever the statute of limitations on the original offense.

    Here is the NY procedure for registrating a boat (half way down the page): http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmvfaqs.htm

    Here is the Florida procedure: http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/boat-registration.php

    Both ways of registrating a stolen boat look tough to me without getting caught.

    You might get lucky if you buy it for several thousand, law enforcers might just take it from you.
