If the bond is designated as "payable on death", he would not have any interest in the bond until your death and thus it would not normally be considered his asset (during your lifetime). If it could be demonstrated that he was giving you the money to buy the bonds, that could change.
We have seperate checking accounts and I pay for them out of my checking. I have the copy of the checks to prove it.
