Responsibility for a lease after moving out of the country
My father leased a car for me (my name is not on the lease),
and I made most of the payments over the last year. In January
I got a job offer in Beijing, China. My father agreed to take
back the car and arrange to turn it into the bank. He lives
in Pennsylvania. I agreed to pay him a portion of the lease
termination fee, $3500, beginning with a $500 payment next
April. The agreement was made verbally, and I wrote and
signed a copy of the agreement which my father has (I do
not have a written copy of this agreement).
However, since I moved to China, my father has not turned
in the car, and wants me to pay the monthly lease fee. He is
threatening to sue if I do not pay. How much power does he
have legally in this matter? Please let me know and thank you.
