Uninsured Teenage Driver with 40/25 Speeding Ticket

Hello
I am a resident of Norfolk, VA, and I just got a speeding ticket for driving 40mph at a 25mph road. I am 18 years old and just got my license (temporary paper version for students) two months ago, and am a junior in high school. The vehicle I drive was insured under my father, but I am not an insured driver. So here are my questions (please forgive my ignorance as it is my first time doing something like this....):
1) is there penalty for being an uninsured driver, even though my vehicle was insured, under my father's insurance?
2) I got caught in January 6, and I still didn't receive my official court order. Could my case have somehow become dissolved due to the officer's mistake, etc, and if so, should I check with the court on this?
3) What are my options, and which would you recommend?
4) Would this affect my father's insurance, or would it just sit on my record and affect my insurance when I get one?
5) any tips?

why aren't you an insured driver? Do you live with your father? If so, in most cases, all drivers in the household are considered covered unless specifically listed as not being covered.

have a little respect for your father and his property.

Buy your own vehicle and pay for your own insurance so you don't end up getting your father involved in a lawsuit he shouldn't be involved in

Wow...first of all I do not screw around, I guess my words painted a wrong picture of me.
I am a foreign student that came to U.S. to study, and I had no choice but to stay out of school for a year and learn the language and customs. I am not a "failure" at school, I am doing reall well in the International Baccalaureat Program.
I understand you had a little misunderstanding, but could you answer the questions asked without showing so much of your own judgemental sentiment?
If I was such a failure and inconsiderate man as you make me out to be, I wouldn't even be posting in this thread and researching to take responsibility for my actions, would I?

Were you cited for being uninsured or was it only a "speeding citation"?

As for your court date, does your citation not have an appearance date? If not, you should contact the court for more information.

well, the slow your ass down part stands.

You have to realize that by driving your fathers car, if you have an accident, he will be involved with any lawsuit that might result. That is where the "respect your father and his property" comes from.


but I can answer no more because you never answered what I asked. Why would you be an excluded driver from your fathers car? Do you live with your father?

as to how long it has been since the ticket. I'm not familiar with Virginia processes with tickets. In some states, you either send in money as directed or file a plea with the court. Some states send a notice from the court. I don't know how VA treats theirs. There should be direction on the ticket. If not, hopefully there is a phone number. Call them and ask them what actions you need to be taking.

And you are right about the other parts...I agree.
No, I do not live with my father..and to my knowledge I am not listed on his insurance policy, (for private reasons...)
I will call the number on the ticket though. thank you!

I was only cited for speeding. Nothing about my insurance was mentioned.
On the ticket, however, the car's license number is mentioned, so I was wondering how this would affect my father's insurance.
Will it affect his insurance, or will it only affect my driving record and hence only affect my insurance when I get one?

if there was no ticket issued for no insurance, then it is a non-issue. All you will have to address is the speeding ticket.



If you do not live with him, you are what would be considered as an occasional driver. Unless you are specifically excluded, you are likely covered under his insurance.

Your ticket should not affect your fathers insurance BUT if you are an excluded driver and he allows you to drive his car, the insurance company is not going to cover you or the car if you are in an accident. If they discover he is allowing an excluded driver to drive his car, they could cancel his policy.
