Does the State of New York or the Town of Brookhaven Dol Criminal Background Checks

My question involves a background check in the State of: New York and Texas

I received a felony deferred adjudication in Texas in 1995 and completed it in 2005. I now live in New York and want to apply for either a state, Suffolk county or Town of Brookhaven job. Does anyone know if there are some positions where a criminal background check will not be done? Will they only check New York? Or will they also include Texas where I lived previously?

I can say for a fact that if they check Texas it will come up because I applied for a number of jobs in Texas up until recently, and it always came up--even though I was never convicted and have completed felony probation.

I have researched all that I can and cannot find a factual answer to this question. If anyone has an answer or insight, please help. Thank you very much for your time.

It is fairly common for criminal background checks to be run these days, especially in government positions. It is impossible to say for certain what the policies and procedures are for a particular town. The state jobs you can pretty much guarantee a check of some kind. Different places handle it differently. Some use private companies to do their checks, some might run you through NCIC, again...hard to say. If you just recently moved, odds are whoever does the check will check with your previous place of residence.

I moved 2 1/2 years ago and have been working here since 9/08. Do you or does anyone have an idea if a background check will include only the State of NY or both NY and Texas for at least some/certain county or state jobs? If it is concrete that I will not pass a check I don't want to invest in trying for a state or county job. If I have a shot I want to try.

Again, it's a crap shoot as every employer has their own P&Ps. Some will stay local, some check nationally. Nothing is concrete. Depending on the nature of your charges, one employer might hire you while another won't. If it involved sale of drugs or a violation of the 7 deadly sins...that is a huge red flag to a potential employer. All you can do is apply and disclose if they ask. See where the road takes you.

Thank you for your help. I don't think my felony was one of the 7 deadly sins, but I am not sure what they are. Can you elaborate?
