Angry Criminal Record 17 Years Ago

I got into trouble 17 years ago. Thank god in California they can only do back ground checks up too 7 years. The thing I am lost at is like on target application they still want you to disclose any Criminal records. So even though it has been 17 years and no other troubles, do I say yes on the applications for jobs or no? If I say no is that lying when they ask for the question but the state law says you do not have to disclose if over 7 years?

Please let me know you advice. Thanks

I don't know anything about the job, and I cannot see the application from here. Some employers are able to inquire more deeply, and some employers (e.g., federal employers) aren't limited by state laws. Can you share a few details and tell us exactly what is being asked?

Your best bet is to always answer all questions on the employment application
truthfully. As Mr. Knowitall asked, exactly how is the "criminal hx" question
    worded on the application?

    Thanks.

They mostly always ask do you have a criminal record? The california law is just confusing on criminal records. The companies cannot go back past 7 years. My situation is 17 years ago. But I don't know if I an suppossed to still put on yes ven though it has been past the 7 years.

    Thanks
