Why Was I Charged for Paraphernalia Not Possesion of Marijuana and Taken to Jail

My question involves criminal law for the state of: mississippi
i was arrested yesterday for possession of paraphernalia, the officer told me he was gonna do me a favor and rather then charge me for the less then half gram of marijuana he charged me with paraphernalia and took me to jail.I was not read my rights, now after searching the web i realize i would have been better off with a possession of marijuana as there is no first time offense jail time and fines are half as much . what i dont understand is i wasnt driving i was walkin so why was i takin to jail for paraphenalia (rolling papers) and do i plead guilty or risk askin for a public defender and fighting it. can someone explain this to me?

It's best to have lawyer when you go to court.. Chances are you won't get jail time,the paraphernalia might look better then having a possession charge on your record or might help if you get caught w. weed in the future,idk the cop could of been full of it. It also could of been possible if you had a small amt of weed and the papers you could of faced 2 charges. Having one might also make diversion more likely if it's available.
