In order to avoid liability, taxi companies usually enter into the following type of arrangement with a driver: The driver is an independent contractor, who rents or leases the taxi for a day. There is a fee for the rental, and may be an additional fee for mileage or for using the taxi company's dispatch services.
The driver is typically regarded as self-employed, and thus responsible to pay "self-employment taxes" in addition to making quarterly estimated payments of income tax. The driver typically benefits also from carrying additional insurance in the event of an accident.
