Default Negative Information About My Finances and Business

My question involves defamation in the state of: I own a property where I want to open a business. I can't start up the business because of financial problems, partner backing out, etc. I'm about to sell for cheap or lose the property. However, I have recently met with many potential partners who were about to sign a deal with me but were intercepted by a person who has inside information about my status and the property. I recently caught wind and have proof that this person finds out who I met and talks to them behind my back. Then blows the deal. (I believe he wants the business and property for himself)

Based on the small amount of facts I have given, do I have case against this person?
(Keep in mind that I have witnesses).

As you were told when you posted, laws vary by state.

There's no state in which the sharing of truthful information constitutes defamation. Truth is an absolute defense to an accusation of defamation.

A few states allow causes of action that can provide recourse in the event of disclosure of certain embarrassing private information.

This is in NJ, but anyway:

What if a bribe is involved? The person is giving cash to the potential partners to walk away. I had a friend fake a deal with me and that same friend was confronted a couple days later by a person with cash. The person said take this money and walk away from any deal. What should I do now?
Get a lawyer? DO I have a case?
    Thanks in advance for replys.

You can't bribe a private individual.

You don't have a case. Maybe you should just sell the property to the most interested buyer.
