Default Young Adult Caught Shoplifting in Los Angeles County, California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California (Los Angeles County)

My 19 yr old daughter was caught shoplifing at a large retail store. She was arrested by the local PD and released. She appeared before a judge who gave her the option to knock it down to an infraction so long as she did community service and a behavioral management program.

She did not complete any community service and only attended two hours of the behavioral management program.

She has court today. What is the judge likely to do?

Depends on the judge. I would expect that her original charge will be re-instated as a Misdemeanor, which will negatively affect her job options, and even college options.

The judge will likely also take into consideration that she was given a break, and put in little/no effort to complete her original sentence.

More probation is likely. Jail is a possibility.

Not to mention she crapped on the possibility of it vanishing from her record... which means the future job hunt should be an adventure.

Basically, she "lazied" herself into a boat load of unnecessary trouble.

If she is attending college or plans on it, she will need to make sure career field does not include money or high levels of trust. Definitely no Criminal Justice degree. Nursing is very iffy.

For jobs, she has screwed herself out of retail, fast food, banking, waitressing, bartending (no one wants a thief handling money or credit cards).
