Default Mississippi Rent Increase After Lease Expired

Last month my lease expired and my rent was changed from $50 per month to $625 per month. My landlord conveniently went on vacation for a month when the recertification papers were due. When she got back, she said they were late even though I turned them in to her and she sent them back right before going on vacation making it impossible for me to give them to her.

I am in the process of moving out. I did not sign any agreement to pay that increased rent and now she is sueing me for the rent. Am I going to have to pay back the increased rent even though I never agreed to paying that much in the first place?

Is there a typo there? ("from $50 to $625?") What rent is she suing you over?

My rent originally was $50 a month because I am a student with low income. She increased my rent to $625 a month when I told her that I'd be moving out. She refused my recertification papers that lowers my rent so she could charge full market rent. I never signed or agreed to pay this much, she wants to sue me for $1300 which is 2 months of the adjusted rent plus court fees.

Knowing nothing of your circumstances, or what type of rent subsidy was involved, I suggest you consult with student legal services with your school, or a local legal aid office.
