Question Co-signer skipped town
My husband and I had a friend of his from highschool staying with us. He had no way to get to work so we agreed to help him buy a vehicle. As it turned out he had absolutely no credit so I had to sign for the vehicle with the "friend" as the co-signer. There was a dispute over him not paying us rent this month and he decided to pack his things into a car that I partially own and skip town. Now no one can find him because he's gone to Atlanta to live with his dad who recently moved (with in the past few weeks). I need to either get my name off the loan or get him off of the loan and get the car back but the police wont help b/c it's a civil matter. I don't want to make payments on a car I don't have in my possession but I don't want my credit to go down the drain. What do I do?

Are you on the car title, or just the loan?

If you are not on the title you are SOL.

Then, assuming you can track him down, you should be able to get a set of keys from the dealership (if you don't have one) and take the car. You may wish to notify the local police in advance that you intend to collect your car, showing them the evidence of ownership, because the car may subsequently be reported stolen. Once you have recovered the car, assuming he's still not willing to cooperate, you should be able to get a court order permitting you to sell the car and transfer the registration.
