Caught Shoplifting - What's Going to Happen

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Mexico

I was caught shoplifting at Khols about a month ago. I tooks some clothes and walked outside. A cop came and took me to jail and I was booked.

I spoke to a public defender and I was told to plead not guilty. And then I recieved another court date.

The court date is coming up pretty soon, and I already have a public defender.. I'm nervous and I don't want this on my record..

Unless you are a minor, you will have a Misdemeanor charge on your record. It may be for a plea deal of a lesser charge. However, a thorough background check will still show the original charge.

Expect the Civil Demand in the mail. Pay it asap.

Expect court costs and fines; and probably a few hundred for the Public Defender. You might get Anti-Shoplifting Classes and/or Community Service. Depends on your area, and the officials involved.
