Travel to Hawaii while on J-1 visa. Do I need to take my passport with me?

I am on a J-1 visa and been in the country for three years now. I have the original visa issued in 2003 and has been renewed within the US annually via ECFMG and Dept of state by getting a new form of DS-2019 annually mailed to me. I plan to travel to Hawaii in August for honey moon. My wife is a U.S citizen. Will they be checking my country's passport and original visa stamp on the way back from Hawaii, and should I take my DS-2019 forms with me along with my employers contract or does it suffice to take a valid NY ID.
Please let me know.

You are travelling to and from Hawaii by direct flight from the continental United States?

yes, I will be travelling from NYC to Maui with one stop in chicago. My return flight will be from Maui to SF.

I was born in the U.S., and now almost always take my passport with me as ID when I travel by air (even for flights within the continental U.S.), so I'm not going to say "don't take your passport". But a flight from U.S. soil (mainland U.S.) to U.S. soil (Hawaii) doesn't require that you go through customs or immigration.
