Default No Contact from Public Defender

I have a public defender but I don't seem to be able to get in contact with him to talk to him about my case. I feel like I don't have a clue what is happening in my case or what is going to happen when I go to court. My question is, can I fire my public defender and hire a different attorney though my court date is about a week away? I have not been to court on these charges yet and don't know whether they have continued it at any time and am just generally feeling that I am not being adequately represented and need to know what my options are.

If you retain a lawyer, your lawyer should prepare and file a 'substitution of attorneys' that reflects his appearance in the case and releases the pubic defender's office.
