Default Defamation of Character By a Coworker

My question involves defamation in the state of: Virginia

I coach a highschool soccer team, and employee for the same school system which obviously does not like me at all )and talks about everyone and starts rumors like no other woman you have ever heard of), told one of my players, and their mother, that I buy them beer before games. Of course its not true. I want to nip this in the bud now, because of course this could cost me my job, my reputation, jail time, etc. When it is 110% false.

is this defamation of character and is suing possible?

    It is.

    and is suing possible?
Until you have actual damages - say, get disciplined or fired - there's really nothing to sue for. Unless you've got about three years and a spare thirty grand lying about, it's pointless to sue now.

Have you contacted both her superiors and yours about the situation? You need to make the people you work for well aware of what's going on, so they can deal with it appropriately.

Lawsuits are a last option, not a first.

Oh yes of course. And thank you for replying!

I worded it wrong I guess I apologize, I meant as if I get fired for this, or whatnot THEN is it possible to sue.

It might be a good idea to first get an attorney to send her a cease and desist letter and let her know how expensive slander and defamation civil actions are, and also point out that homeowners insurance does not cover intentional torts.

Most people will back down. If she is a serious nut case, then start collecting evidence, keep a journal, get witness statements, etc.
