Time Between Shifts

My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: Michigan

Often times my employer will only give us 8 hours between shifts. I have a 40 minute commute if traffic is good plus getting ready before work which only gives me about 5 hours of sleep between shifts. Is this legal? I heard from some people (not legal professionals) that they had to give us at least 10 hours between shifts. I need to know what the legal amount of time that they are required to give us between shifts in the state of Michigan. Please help. Thank you.

in Michigan, with the exception of a few types of jobs (and those are most often federally regulated rather than state) or you have a contract there is no required off time between shifts.

And the same applies in the other 49 states, too, at least where general employment is concerned.

As jk says, there are industry-specific exceptions, which are mostly (but not entirely) Federal. These are primarily, if not entirely, industries where there is a public safety factor; airline pilot, long haul trucker, in some states nurses.

Is there a possibility that you fall into one of those categories?
