Avoiding Having Neighbors Attach a Gate to a Fence

I live in TX in a new subdivision about 1-2 years old. We've been having difficulty with our neighbors and want to put up a fence. Our neighbors do not want to split the cost of the fence. If I put the fence 1/2 to 1 inch inside our property line, would that legally prevent our neighbors from attaching a gate to our fence? Would we eventually lose that 1/2 - 1 inch because it would be on their side of the fence? I know that it sounds vindictive, but we have had other issues with them & we want no dealings with them.

I suggest you check the law in the locality you are in. I suspect that the setback for the fence is more than 1 - 2 inches.
