Question Roommate Kicked Me Out, Won't Let Me Get My Belongings

I live in TX and am having an issue with a sticky situation, hope to hear back some advice

I was laid off and a friend of 16 years offered a room in his house while I get situated. There was never a monetary condition ever brought up. In fact, they were the one who advised I move in with them, after a few times of hearing the offer, I accepted. However, now there are issues they brought on , and basically i feel evicted, even though there was NO contract written or verbal, but he put all my stuff ion garage one day, and kept what he wanted and wont let me get it, because NOW all of a sudden he wants money. He is holding my things for ransom, and this power trip is getting out of control. What are my rights, since there isnt anything legally binding an agreement on either side?

Go to the police station and ask if they'll give you a "civil assist" to recover your belongings.
