I'm hoping to put together a book that will be sent to a professional printer and printed/published so it looks like a real book one would find in a bookstore, but it would be just for me. I want the book (which covers the last few decades in news and pop culture) to include several favorite song lyrics and movie quotes. Because I will be paying to have the book published (even if it's only a couple copies just for myself and that's it), I was told that copyright laws still come in to play. I would have liked to use famous news and celebrity photos but when I called the Associated Press, said they would need lots of money for each picture used, so I decided to skip that part. However, I still was hoping to include song lyrics (just one or two verses for each selected song) and movie quotes (just a couple famous lines for each selected movie). I have no problem attributing who/where the source came from, but I'm unsure how to ask for permission if I need to, and what the laws are regarding that area? I called the book printer about this and even HE seemed unsure.
