Minor Shoplifting in California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

My friend's 4 year old daughter was caught shoplifting at a retail store in CA. She was charged with a 490.1 and is scheduled to appear in court. It is her first offense and her mom's primary concern is the consequences the conviction might have on her daughter's record. What are all possible things she might be charged with (misdemeanor, infraction, etc), and what can they do to make the sentence as light as possible? Should they hire a lawyer? Is it possible to pay the fine and do community service to have the conviction removed from her record as soon as possible?

It's very possible for a juvenile court to defer a minor's charge, rather than adjudicating the case. Whether that will happen in this particular case depends upon such factors as her prior record, her school and community records, the stability of her home and support of her parents, etc.

Whatever happens, she'll be eligible to seal her juvenile record when she turns 18.
