Will Cops Knock on My Door if They Suspect Pot Plants Inside

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas


Can I find out why the cops were knocking on my door the last 2 nights ?
I didn't answer - don't know if I might have a warrant or if one of the neighbors maybe smelled pot. It doesn't smell outside that I can tell but who knows maybe my nose is off.

This is in Texas (Dallas) - will the cops just come to the door like that if a neighbor reports smelling something ?

They just knocked a few times then left after a minute- I saw them out the window- a regular dallas squad car.

and then if they have probable cause, they can get a warrant and if they have a no knock warrant, they just won't bother knocking.

You can certainly call them and ask. You'll have no way of verifying if what they are telling you is the truth or not (they ARE allowed to lie to you). Yes, if someone called in a complaint, you could expect officers to knock on the door. If they had articulable reasons to suspect that criminal activity, like drugs, was afoot, they could most certainly seek a warrant to search your home, or, they may place the home under surveillance for a time to continue to gather more evidence with which to support their request for a warrant, or before flat out making an arrest.

I wish i just knew what they wanted- if it's a warrant I would go take care of it.

I guess I am more worried about the possible smell - but I figured if they really suspected they would get the warrant and be done with it not just come knocking then leave.

It was only one car also - I kinda figured that if they are serving a warrant they might have backup ?

I guess my biggest question is do they investigate cultivation/smell complaints by just cruising by and knocking on the door like it is a noise complaint and hope to just barge in or smell something themselves if I open the door ?

Besides the pot, why don't you answer the door? Sorry, but do you really think that the cops have time for this kind of misdemeanor stuff? If you want to take care of any possible warrant, why are you worried and not answering the door?

If you're growing, maybe this should be your wake up call to stop. Honestly, if you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have to worry about law enforcement knocking on the door.

I don't think i am doing anything wrong but maybe I should stick to texas-sanctioned recreational substances and walk down to the liquor store and fill the pockets of Seagram's corporation but personally I prefer my liver and stomach not to rot out.

If I could afford it I would cross the imaginary lines in the dirt to Colorado or California where personal choices are at least somewhat respected in their own homes.
For that matter I could be in Saudi Arabia where alcohol consumption is even illegal but even in that backwards place they won't hassle you in your own home...

well, the courts of Texas disagree with you and since they have the ability to toss your butt into prison, I would worry about what they think.

you typically don't get either in jail or prison.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Unless/until you move to a state where pot is marginally legal, you either abide by the laws or risk the consequences. It really is that simple.

your "advice" contained no advice - only opinion of my character- clearly not what i asked for and unless you are dense then you knew this- so obviously your replies where what you needed to get out there, not a sincere respone. enjoy your posting - personally i wouldn't be caught dead harrassing people on forums to get my jock off like you seem to.....
