Default Parents' Responsibility for Deceased Son's Medical Debt
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Texas

Hello: My 21 year old brother passed away 2 weeks ago. He was a full-time college student with a part-time job & lived at home with my parents. He had no health insurance & no assets to speak of. My family is wondering if the parents are resposible for paying his ER & credit card bills. Neither my father or mother signed anything at the hospital holding them responsible for his medical bills. Medical bill debt is approx $33,000. My family & I appreciate all your advice in this matter. Thank you.

Unless they signed something agreeing to pay, your parents are not responsible for their grown childrens' debt.

My condolences to you and your family.

Thank you for your replay. Do you or anyone else know how to go about handling his bills? I read somewhere that writing "deceased - no estate" on bills and sending them back is enough. I'm wondering if there are any other measures to take.

I don't think there is any certain procedure for it. Although if there are bills you want to be written off, a copy (or an original in certain cases) of the death certificate is often a good starting point.
