I'm a British citizen who is currently an Undergraduate at a university in the UK. I was told by my university that their were summer opportunities in the US to observe research which will help me with my course. My university contacted the university in the US, (where I would be visiting) and that university told me that I needed to apply for a J1 visa. At this point I had already booked my tickets to the US, as well as some other tickets for a short trip around the US after the research trip. I was going to travel to 3 other places, and the holiday would be lasting 5 weeks. I then applied for a J1 visa, and went to the US embassy in London. Here they rejected my visa, as they thought I did not have enough ties with the UK, even though I had printed off my return flights to the UK and showed them, and even though I'm half way through a degree in the UK! I was then told by the man who was interviewing me at the embassy, that I did not need a J1 visa, as I would not be being paid by the university. Therefore the university in the US gave me the wrong information.

I was then told that I had to re-apply for an ESTA as my circumstances had changed. I did this, and then my ESTA was also rejected. Which now mean not only can I not observe research in the US, but I also cannot travel afterwards, with my friend (which means she is now going alone!). Therefore, thanks to the university in the US, i cannot travel to America this summer and I was supposed to be leaving in 2 weeks!

I think that the visa which I should have applied for is the B2 visa? However, it would take me weeks, if not months, to get an appointment with the US embassy in London, and even if I did, what do you think the chances of being rejected again are?

Any help would be extremely helpful!

Thanks,
DevLou

P.s. Please bare in mind the fact that my J1 visa was rejected because it was the wrong visa, NOT that they didn't want me to work there (as I wouldn't be). Surely they should understand that this is a mistake, and accept my ESTA or B2 visa application?

Tourist Visas: Is it Easier to Obtain a Tourist Visa if Married

I am an American citizen living in the same country as my boyfriend. We met in Russia, and I tried to take him to America to meet my family (on a tourist visa), and they denied him. I want to take him to America for 2 weeks from here (India) so he can finally meet my family and friends, and also see a little bit of where I am from.

Some people suggested we get married so that he can obtain a visa easier, but I've read online that being married to an American can actually make it harder to get a visa.
My question is what should I do?
Should he even say that he is going with me? I need to go home to renew my visa for here, but I really want him to come with me.
How can I make that happen? Please help!

My question involves civil rights in the State of: North Dakota

Hello, long story short I was driving from Canada into the US and I was stopped at the border. I am a US citizen, but was not treated like one. My vehicle was searched and everything I had in their was taken out ( which was plenty of things because I was moving). All my paperwork was searched and I assume they went through my cell phone as well because when they gave it back the battery was removed and they had it in a different room . I was held in a cell for over an hour and was verbally abused the whole time. The border patrol agent kept screaming at me wheres the drugs. After they didn't find anything they finally let me go. They set me back on the time of my trip which later caused me to get a speeding ticket. Is there anything I can do? I told them I didn't want them to search my car and they told me they had the right to do so since I was crossing the border. They refused to answer my questions and told me if I continued to watch the search they would transfer me to a different cell. The whole time I was locked up not one other person was stopped. I assume it was because I am young. Iv been trying to contact attorneys but I am unsure of what kind to contact and cant find one who will take the case. This happened almost two years ago so I need to deal with it ASAP. Any suggestions on what I can or should do? I feel my rights were violated and I was extremely inconvenienced and traumatized. Thank you for your help.

Hi everyone,
I am new to this form.
I am on H4 visa and planning to bring my parents for pleasure trip. While filling the DS160 forum , I got a few doubts and need some expert advice..

My father is now retired but previously he has been working in a scientific govt organisation. He had been rejected visa 3 times around 25 years back ( two times student visa and one time visitor visa). While filling the DS 160 form there is qs " Have you ever been refused a US visa before" . I know I have to say YES but they ask the Explanation. Can anybody please suggest what to write in this column. Does the previous rejections have any affect on the present visitor visa application since now the situation is different and my dad is retired.

PLease help.. I am worried what to fill in there and if the there will be any implications of previous visa denial on present application.

Thank you very much
